We are proud to recognize their efforts.”

He continued, “We are proud to partner with over 200 HARDI members across North America to continue to support the industry with qualified NATE-certified technicians. Distributors who offer NATE testing tend to have contractors that are better selling customers, have fewer warranty costs, and require less technical service and support than contractors without NATE-certified technicians. We hope this increased recognition will support more distributors to join us in our efforts.”

ARLINGTON, VA. – (September 21, 2015) North American Technician Excellence (NATE) proudly announces the awarding of the 2015 Golden Toolbox Award to longtime HVACR industry professional Donald L. Frendberg at Comfortech 2015 in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Golden Toolbox Award, created by NATE and Contracting Business Magazine in 2006, recognizes an industry professional who demonstrates outstanding service, support, and advocacy for technician certification.

Recently retired as Executive Director of the HVACR Workforce Development Foundation and a former Board Chairman and CEO for NATE, Frendberg’s professional background is a blending of experience derived from firms involved in manufacturing, contracting, and consulting engineering. These differing fields, all related to the HVACR industry, have provided him with a broad spectrum of technical, sales and business management involvement spanning fifty years.

NATE Chief Operating Officer John Lanier said during the award presentation, “As COO of NATE, I’m proud to continue in Don’s footsteps and build upon his work at NATE to help contractors find the best technicians and help those technicians build strong careers, thereby building a stronger HVACR workforce, a cause we all know is near and dear to Don.”

Lanier also announced the creation of the Donald Frendberg Scholarship to support qualified students in an HVACR program at an accredited institution in Florida, Frendberg’s adopted home state. Through industry donations, including from HARDI’s philanthropic organization HALO (Frendberg previously served is the Executive Vice President/COO of HARDI), NATE will award scholarships and free Industry Competency Exams to students to help them pursue their careers in HVACR. The first scholarship will be awarded in fall 2016.

“We’re so pleased to present Don with this year’s Golden Toolbox Award and to develop a scholarship in his name,” said Lanier “His hard work and support of NATE, workforce training and development, and the entire HVACR industry will be felt for years to come.”

The North American Technician Excellence (NATE) Technical Committee met August 17-19 at the NATE offices in Arlington, Va., to continue its work developing two new exams: a job-readiness certificate exam, and a certification level exam for less experienced support technicians. They are scheduled to be made available in early 2016 to help contractors hire better candidates and to provide technicians with a career development path as they learn and grow professionally.

Since 1997, NATE certification exams have tested real-world working knowledge of HVACR systems. They are developed by the NATE Technical Committee, comprised of industry experts who develop and oversee each exam’s Knowledge Areas of Technician Expertise, or KATEs. In 2015, the NATE Technical Committee was restructured to an active standing roster of 15 members with representation from various industry sectors, including contractors, educators, manufacturers, and working NATE-certified technicians. ARLINGTON, VA.–June 15, 2015—Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning LLC, headquartered in Plano, Texas, is one of North America’s largest heating and air conditioning brands, with more than 2,500 employees in 90 service centers across North America. The company has recently announced its commitment to see 1,000 of its technicians become certified with North American Technician Excellence (NATE) in 2015, as detailed in the latest issue of the NATE Magazine.

“NATE provides Service Experts a content-rich curriculum that allows our technicians to continually enhance their skills, which helps them make the best decisions and recommendations for each homeowner. NATE certification ultimately leads to employee satisfaction, which directly translates to customer satisfaction,” says Todd Berkland, director, U.S. Field Operations, Service Experts.

Working with NATE isn’t new for Service Experts. As a matter of fact, the company has been heavily involved with NATE for more than a decade. In fact, Service Experts CEO, Scott J. Boxer, was chairman of the NATE Board of Directors from 2005 through 2008. “In an effort to serve customers to the best of our ability while reducing callbacks, we realized the importance of properly educating and training technicians. Service Experts quickly embraced the NATE organization as a key resource in furthering those business goals,” says Boxer. By doing so, Service Experts will continue to honor its brand promise to customers, Expert Service, Guaranteed, that is supported by its 5 Standards of Excellence, of which one is sending a NATE-certified tech to the home.

As for the 1,000 NATE-certified technician goal, “It’s definitely a logistical challenge, says Bryan Benak, vice president and general manager, U.S. Operations, “but we are committed to providing superior training and expert service. Based on our experience, our goal is very realistic, and we have a strong operational focus with metrics and performance reviews to help advance each employee in his career. In fact, we are already 70% of the way there.”
