October 2017: PASS User Interface Updates, Air Conditioning Service Exam Beta Test
In the October issue of the NATE advantage, we discuss the beta test of our Air Conditioning Service Exam, look at updates to the PASS user interface, explain how eligible HVACR contractors can become NATE testing organizations, and break down the NATE Consumer Contractor Connection (C3) program.
Beta Test of Air Conditioning Service Exam
NATE will be conducting a beta test of our recently updated Air Conditioning Service exam, as part of our continued focus on improving and maintaining the relevance of our exam offering. Any online Air Conditioning Service exams taken from October 9th will be the new version of the exam. A new passing score will need to be determined as part of the beta testing process. Results will be held for analysis until early December to ensure that the revised score reflects any increased or decreased difficulty of the updated exam.
Should a NATE-certified technician require the Air Conditioning Service exam to recertify, please have them contact NATE. NATE will extend the technician’s certification through the end of the beta test window, to ensure that their certification does not lapse while the exam scores are temporarily held.
Please contact customer service at 877-420-6283 or email askNATE@natex.org if you have additional questions about the process.
PASS User Interface Update
The switch should be seamless from the proctor’s view; changes are mainly cosmetic. However, like the previous system, a user’s browser must be up-to-date to avoid testing problems. Browser configurations can be reviewed and previewed by using the “Updated” link here: https://www.castleworldwide.com/cww/take-a-sample-test.
Please contact customer service at 877-420-6283 or askNATE@natex.org with any questions about the update.
Eligible HVACR Contractors Encouraged to Become NATE Testing Organizations
Registering to become a NATE Testing Organization is good for business. Eligible contractors save time and money by ordering exams directly from NATE to test their technicians. As weather or business needs change, contractors can host sessions at a time that is most convenient.
NATE Testing Organization applications can be completed online at www.natex.org for contractors with:
At least five technicians
An individual outside of the service department who does not have hiring, firing or supervisor responsibilities over the technicians, who will act as the proctor for exams
The ability to conduct at least one (1) test session per year
A space such as training or meeting room that is conducive to testing

PHCC’S 2017 HVAC Apprentice Contest
Certifying the finest technicians in HVACR entails supporting their development at every stage of their career. This year, NATE was proud to sponsor Tyler Chumbley from Holt Plumbing & Heating in West Des Moines, Iowa, at PHCC’s 2017 HVAC Apprentice Contest. Company COO John Lanier took the opportunity to meet with Tyler as he completed the wiring event at the contest. A total of 12 HVAC apprentices were given an opportunity to demonstrate their skills at the event, held during the CONNECT 2017 trade show in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
